Ghar Mandir Murti Sthapana / Varshik Patotsav

Prana pratishtha means establishing life in an image. The murti is purified, the deity is invited through mantras, and the murti is then considered ready for worship, traditionally marked by opening its eyes. Household deities are consecrated in this way too, although the rite is most often seen in temples. Patotsav is the annual anniversary of the installation. It is marked with abhishek, a fresh shringar (dressing and ornaments), a small offering of food and aarti. Customs differ between traditions and sampradays, for example Swaminarayan and other Vaishnav families have their own practices. 1. Sankalp and Ganesh puja. 2. Purification of the murti, with snan and abhishek. 3. Invocation of the deity and the prana pratishtha mantras. 4. Shringar: clothes, ornaments and flowers for the murti. 5. Offerings and aarti, then prasad. For Patotsav the abhishek, shringar, a small food offering and aarti are repeated. The full ritual takes about 2.5 hours.
