About the festival
Why Ganesh Chaturthi matters
Ganesh Chaturthi, on the fourth day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada, celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. Families bring home a murti, worship him for one and a half, three, five, seven or ten days, and then immerse the idol with a farewell procession.
Many families prefer an eco-friendly clay (shadu mati) murti and natural colours, to keep the rivers and lakes clean.
The story
The most well-known story tells of Goddess Parvati making a figure from turmeric paste to guard her door. When Lord Shiva was stopped by the boy, a conflict followed, and the boy was later restored with the head of an elephant, and Shiva declared that he would be worshipped first before all other gods.
Puja vidhi
How the puja is done, step by step
- 1
Bring the murti
Bring the clay murti home before the muhurat, with a cloth covering it, and place a clean seat for him.
- 2
Pran pratishtha
In the muhurat, the pandit invites the presence of Lord Ganesha into the murti with mantras (pran pratishtha).
- 3
Shodashopachara puja
The sixteen-step puja: invocation, seat, water, bath, cloth, sacred thread, flowers, incense, lamp, offering, betel, and aarti. Durva grass, red hibiscus and modak are offered.
- 4
Daily aarti
Offer prasad and sing the aarti every morning and evening for as long as the murti is in the home.
- 5
Visarjan
On the day of immersion, offer a farewell puja, then immerse the murti in water, preferably in a tank or a bucket at home if your city has rules against open water immersion.
