About the festival
Why Dhanteras matters
Dhanteras falls on Trayodashi, the thirteenth tithi of the dark fortnight, and opens the five days of Diwali. It is the day families worship Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician of Ayurveda, along with Goddess Lakshmi and Kubera, the keeper of wealth.
The day is about wellbeing as much as wealth: the old saying is that good health is the first form of wealth. In India, Ayurveda Day is also observed on Dhanteras.
Buying something new, such as gold or silver, a utensil, or even a small item, is a widely followed custom, because it is considered auspicious to bring in something new on this day.
The story
According to tradition, Lord Dhanvantari appeared holding a pot of amrit during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), and Dhanteras remembers that day.
A popular folk story tells of a young prince whose horoscope foretold that he would die on the fourth day after his wedding. His wife heaped her jewellery and coins at the door and lit lamps all around, and sang through the night. When Yama came in the form of a serpent, the glitter and light overwhelmed him and he left. This is the origin of the Yama Deepam, a lamp lit in the evening for protection.
Puja vidhi
How the puja is done, step by step
- 1
Clean and decorate
Clean the house and the puja space. Make a rangoli at the entrance and put up a mango-leaf toran. Many families draw small footprints from the door to the puja room.
- 2
Set the altar
Place images or murtis of Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi, Kubera and Lord Dhanvantari on a clean cloth. Place a kalash with water, mango leaves and a coconut. Keep your new purchase, coins and cash box nearby.
- 3
Sankalp and Ganesh puja
Take the sankalp (the family's resolve to perform the puja) and begin with Lord Ganesha, as every puja does.
- 4
Dhanvantari puja
Offer water, flowers and prasad to Lord Dhanvantari, and pray for the health of the family.
- 5
Lakshmi–Kubera puja
In the Pradosh Kaal, worship Goddess Lakshmi and Kubera with flowers, rice, kumkum, a diya and sweets. Offer the coins and the new purchase. Many families recite the Lakshmi aarti.
- 6
Yama Deepam
After sunset, light an oil lamp at the entrance of the house, traditionally facing south, for protection of the family. Many families light a diya with four wicks. Follow your own family custom.
- 7
Aarti and prasad
Close with an aarti, share the prasad and light diyas around the house.
