About the festival

Why Dussehra (Vijayadashami) matters

Dussehra, or Vijayadashami, falls on the tenth day after the start of Navratri. It marks the victory of good over evil, and is seen as an auspicious day to start new work or learning.

Many families worship tools, books and vehicles (Ayudha Puja) and the Shami tree, and some begin a child's first lessons on this day (Vidyarambham).

The story

Different regions tell different stories. In much of India the day remembers Lord Rama's victory over Ravana. In the east it marks the day Goddess Durga defeated Mahishasura.

Puja vidhi

How the puja is done, step by step

In the Aparahna, do the puja with the family: offer flowers, incense, a lamp and prasad, and recite the prayers of your tradition.

  3. 3

    Shami or Aparajita puja

Many families worship the Shami tree or Goddess Aparajita and exchange Shami leaves as a sign of good wishes.

  4. 4

    Evening

Ravan Dahan is held at dusk in many places. Share sweets with friends and family.
