About the festival

Why Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) matters

Diwali, the festival of lights, is the main day of the five-day celebration. Families worship Goddess Lakshmi together with Lord Ganesha on the new-moon (Amavasya) evening, light lamps in every corner of the house and ask for prosperity and wellbeing in the year ahead.

For many business families, especially in Gujarat and western India, this is also the time for Chopda Pujan, the worship of the new account books, as the start of the new financial year.

The story

Different traditions remember different stories. Many remember the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile, welcomed by rows of lamps. Others remember the day Goddess Lakshmi appeared at the churning of the ocean, or the day she is believed to visit clean, bright homes.

Puja vidhi

How the puja is done, step by step

  1. 1

    Prepare the house

Clean the house and decorate the entrance with rangoli, toran and flowers. Light diyas at the doorstep and around the home before the puja.

  2. 2

    Set the altar

Place Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha on a clean cloth. Many families also place Goddess Saraswati and Kubera. Set a kalash, and keep coins, jewellery and account books near the altar.

  3. 3

    Sankalp and Ganesh puja

Take the sankalp and begin with Lord Ganesha.

  4. 4

    Lakshmi puja

In the Pradosh Kaal, worship Goddess Lakshmi with flowers, rice, kumkum, a diya, incense and sweets, and offer the coins. Recite the Lakshmi aarti.

  5. 5

Chopda Pujan (if you keep accounts)

Business families worship the new books and write auspicious symbols on the first page, as per their tradition.

  6. 6

    Aarti, prasad and lamps

Close with the aarti, share the prasad with the family, and keep the lamps lit through the evening.
