About the festival

Why Navratri (Sharad) matters

Navratri means nine nights. In the Sharad Navratri of the Ashwin month, families worship Goddess Durga in nine forms, one each day, and many keep fasts. It ends with Ashtami or Navami and is followed by Dussehra.

The nine forms worshipped are Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri.

The story

The festival remembers the victory of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura, who could not be defeated by any god. The gods combined their powers into the Goddess, who fought for nine days and defeated him on the tenth.

Puja vidhi

How the puja is done, step by step

  1. 1

    Ghatasthapana on Day 1

Clean the puja space. Place a kalash with water, mango leaves and a coconut on a bed of soil sown with barley or other grain. Many families light an akhand jyot, a lamp kept burning for the nine days.

  2. 2

    Daily puja

Each morning, offer flowers, incense, a lamp and prasad to Goddess Durga and to that day's form. Many families read or recite the Durga Chalisa or the Durga Saptashati.

  3. 3

    Fasting

Many devotees fast, either fully or on fruit and milk, and eat sattvic food without onion, garlic and grains such as ordinary wheat and rice, as per their custom.

  4. 4

    Ashtami or Navami

Families do the Durga havan and perform Kanya pujan: they invite young girls, wash their feet, offer them a meal and gifts, and seek their blessings.

  5. 5

    Conclusion

On the last day the kalash puja is concluded (visarjan or uttar puja) as per the family's tradition, followed by prasad.
