About the Vidhi

Mundan, also called Chudakarana, is the sanskar of a child's first haircut. The muhurat is fixed by the pandit, based on the child's time of birth. For the ritual the pandit performs a havan with the mother seated facing the sacred fire, holding the child on her lap. The pandit cuts a small part of the hair while chanting mantras, and then the barber shaves the rest. Families commonly do the sanskar between the child's first few months and about three years.
