About the festival

Why Chhath Puja matters

Chhath is a four-day festival dedicated to Surya, the Sun god, and Chhathi Maiya. It is observed mainly in Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and by families from these regions living in other cities.

It is known for its strict discipline, including a fast of about thirty-six hours without water, and for the offering of arghya to the setting and rising sun at a river, pond or other water body.

The story

Traditions link Chhath to the worship of the Sun in the Vedic period, and to stories of Draupadi and of Mata Sita. The devotee gives thanks for health and for the wellbeing of the family, particularly children.

Puja vidhi

How the puja is done, step by step

  1. 1

    Day 1: Nahay Khay

The devotee bathes and cleans the house, then eats a simple sattvic meal, usually including bottle gourd and rice with chana dal.

  2. 2

    Day 2: Kharna

The devotee fasts through the day without water, and breaks the fast after sunset with kheer and rotis, which are shared as prasad. The long fast then begins.

  3. 3

    Day 3: Sandhya Arghya

The family goes to a water body with the prasad in bamboo baskets (soop) and offers arghya to the setting sun. Songs are sung at the ghat.

  4. 4

    Day 4: Usha Arghya

Before sunrise, the family returns to the water body and offers arghya to the rising sun. The devotee then breaks the fast (paran) with prasad.
